The Van Gogh Museum is an art museum dedicated to the life and works of Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries. It is located in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands and contains the largest collection of Van Gogh’s painting and drawings. The modern Van Gogh Museum houses over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and hundreds of letters written by the artist. The museum is actively committed to contributing to the conservation, restoration and acquisition of the artist’s works.

All visitors are required to book tickets for the Van Gogh Museum online by selecting a time slot.  It is advisable to arrive on time otherwise it will not be possible to visit the museum  after the booked entrance time. This is due to the limited number of visitors admitted to the museum per day (maximum 200). We therefore suggest that you book well in advance to avoid being sold out. We recommend discovering the museum first thing in the morning or last thing in the afternoon. Avoid Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.

A full visit can last between 2 and 3 hours,  it is very subjective, and includes both admission to the permanent collection and all temporary exhibitions. Your ticket doesn’t include a time limit. Choose a tour with a guide: he/she will answer all your questions and tell you many interesting anecdotes. Keep in mind that is forbidden to take photographs of works of art (with or without flash).

What is the Van Gogh Museum?

As the name suggests, the museum is dedicated to Van Gogh but there are also works by Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Japanese prints and temporary exhibitions.

When was the Van Gogh Museum built?

Design for a Van Gogh Museum was commissioned by the Dutch government in 1963 to Dutch architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld. Rietveld died a year later, and the building was not completed until 1973, when the museum opened its doors. In 1998 and 1999, the building was renovated by the Dutch architect Martien van Goor, and an exhibition wing by the Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa was added. In late 2012, the museum was closed for renovations for six months.

Is the museum suitable for families with children?

There is large variety of special activities designed for children aged 6 to 12 in particular. You can find a special family multimedia guide available in English and Dutch, and every weekend there are workshops for kids aged 6 to 12. On weekends, you can also book a birthday party for little artists, with packages including a private art workshop and soft drinks, and you can either bring your own birthday cake or ask the museum to provide one.

For a more appealing visit, families can also pick up Vincent’s Traveling Case for free from the Information Desk, which is filled with fun assignments and activities that families can enjoy while exploring the museum.

The traveling case is available in Dutch and English, but if copies run out then families can also pick up free treasure hunt sheets from the Information Desk in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Strollers and pushchairs are allowed inside the museum and parents should keep an eye on children to ensure they don’t touch any of the exhibits.
