1297 marked a significant turning point in Monaco’s history. That year, the Genoese leader of the Guelphs, Francesco Grimaldi, captured the fortress of Monaco through a clever ruse. Throughout this period, the Grimaldis worked tirelessly to fortify the rock of Monaco, ensuring its strategic value and its independence from various external threats, including those from Spain and France.
By the 17th century, Monaco was recognized as a sovereign state by Spain. However, Spanish protection came at a cost, with Monaco becoming virtually a Spanish satellite.
