The Tallinn TV tower is a architectural structure aimed for communications located near Pirita. It is is a free-standing structure with an observation deck, built to provide better telecommunication services for the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics regatta event. With its 313 m (1030.2 ft), the TV tower is the tallest nonbuilding structure in Tallinn. Its observation deck offers a beautiful view on the city of Tallinn and the gulf of Finland. It is also possible to walk on the edge of the plattform on the 21st floor. It was officially opened on 11 July 1980. The building is administered by the public company Levira (formerly Estonian Broadcasting Transmission Center Ltd) and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
For the Tallinn TV Tower there is an efficient queue-managing system: upon your arrival you will be notified very quickly of your waiting time, and while you are waiting you can go to the bar, the shop or the exhibitions on the ground floor (an SMS will notify you for your turn in the elevator). This is due to the limit of 100 people on the Sky floor, which prevents visitors from crowding in front of the glass or information desks and creates a comfortable ambience to enjoy the city sights. There are screens where you can check the number of people actually on the Tower. However, the queue can sometimes take 45 minutes or more.
We don’t advise you to visit the tower on a snowy or cloudy day: in this way you could avoid queueing but you probably will not be able to see anything from the top and this is a pity. On the other hand, sunny days are not common and this leads to an increase in visitors but also provide the best views of Tallinn. The best moment to visit the Tower and avoid queue is early in the morning.
