It is currently the largest unfinished Roman Catholic church. On 7 November 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the church and proclaimed it a minor basilica.
The Sagrada Família is a representative evidence of the Christian faith. In this church, there is a real exaltation of the Family of Nazareth as a model of a united family. The Sagrada Família invites people of all backgrounds and religious orientations to share the meaning of life based on love, harmony, goodness, generosity and peace.
It is an unfinished art nouveau and gothic masterpiece which construction started in 1882 by architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. A year later it was commissioned to the Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, who redesigned it entirely. He drafted a remarkable and original basilica that was to have 18 towers. However, he died before he could complete this chef d’oeuvre, having only built one of the church’s towers. Nevertheless, thanks to his architectural plans, his work continues to be built to this day by renowned architects.
Although the works began in 1882, no one had ever bothered to apply for the necessary building permits. In short, the Sagrada Familia was built illegally but now the situation has been remedied. To tell the truth, however, according to other reconstructions the story is completely different. It is true that the Sagrada Familia did not have the necessary authorizations, but this has nothing to do with the very long construction times.
According to one interpretation, in fact, the Sagrada Familia is deliberately an open-air construction site, a work in constant evolution. It was Gaudì himself, in the design phase, who wanted the work to take years and years to complete: the process itself, in fact, is in itself a work of art and must be experienced as such.
Theoretically, the Sagrada Família should be completed in 2026, the year of the centenary of Gaudì’s death.
